Let's not forget that under the hood (and in reference to SQL Server only) all three data access technologies (SQLClient, SQLOLEDB, and the SQL Server ODBC driver) all communicate with SQL Server via SQL Server's line-level protocol, TDS.

Given this, where we see the impact is in our applications communicating with the data access components.
