Not everything in .NET is new. For instance, Enterprise services is just COM+ with a new name. If you look closely, you can see many of the existing API's like Win32, CDO, etc within the .NET namespaces, bringing all these different API's under the same umbrella. I suppose they've ironed out many inconsistencies, and introduced a few as well.
