Actually, I did not make such a statement. However, if you are in the military and have to work with this type of information sometimes for 72 hour shifts until the “all clear” is sounded as I and many others I worked with did, it can get to you. If all you are able to concentrate on is when will the bomb drop and how we will respond, it can be a bit much for some people. There is no way one person in or out of the military will stop any of this.

There are people who are not effected by the constant threat of world destruction as there are people who murder and have no remorse. I would suggest two things:

1. You do not know how you will react to the pressures of a constant state of readiness until you have “been there”.
2. As a member of the military you are powerless to change any of this. As a civilian about all you can do is to go through the democratic process and vote.

We had a First Lieutenant who wore his Air Force uniform during a Peace Rally. He said nothing – he was just there in the parade. He was arrested by the Military Police, received a court martial, dishonorable discharge and spent five years in Federal Prison at hard labor.
