Thank you. However, I was able to recover from my trauma buy booting from the Windows 2000 CD and running the Windows Repair Console, then selecting the "Manual Repair" option. The problem was that I would never get past the "Prepaing Network Connections" banner during bootup. I had tried booting in "Safe Mode" with and without Networking and with and without the network cable plugged in.
The Manual Repair option was the only mode that detected faulty system files such as NTDETECT.COM and several others in the system directory. I let it replace all those and I was back in business to boot up and go to Windows Update and install all updates.
