Mike,

Not to get inot the actual definition of the word (we're doing that elsewhere aren't we? <bg>) but something struck me here with your assertion. It seems that there is an underlying presumption of agreement on how things are measured. For example there are all kinds of groups and associations and agreements on the definitions of things. Weights, measures, how to do this or that and so forth. One of these is words, which parenthetically is again sort of the arena you and I have been trodding through.

The 'problem', as I see it, is that many folks define the same words differently, hence my snide remark about the OED in another thread. The OED is considered the authority on word definitions whereas the IEEE might be the authority in some electrical engineering areas.

Even here you and Craig seem to be using different 'values' for the word definition. One seems a bit more subjective than the other.

Interesting IMO.

I think in a lot of areas in life it's very important to make sure that the word definitions are consistent.
Best,
