Christian,
MAPI still works *grin*, but requires a MAPI compliant email client to be installed on each system. In addition, using MAPI with more recent versions of Outlook will nag the user with a security message everytime a message is sent, unless you take some evasive measures to prevent this annoyance.
You can bypass the middleman, so to speak, and use an SMTP server to send these emails.
Check out West Wind Internet Protocols at
www.west-wind.com, and Mail/X Controls at
www.mabry.com. If your SMTP server requires authentication, Mail/X supports this. I don't know if wwwIPStuff (west-wind) supports SMTP-Auth.
Another option is CDO (or CDONTS), but I don't see it as a generic option.
