I wrote software for insurance agencies too. In fact, it was an isurance agent that told me about the book I mentioned. I renewed my fixed term life insurance with another company for just $20 more per month (from $53 to $73/mo for the same amount of coverage). I could just have easily stayed with Garden State LIC, but they wanted their new rate of $250/mo, non-negotiable. What people call 'whole life', and product similar to it, is really just the life insurance company buying term on you with another company, and taking the difference between your premium and their premium as pure profit. The 'risk' to the insurnace companies is the difference between the face value of your policy and the 'cash surrender value', which is another can of worms and something the government forced insurance companies to offer after so many people lost their policies in the 30's. When the CSV reaches the face value you are your own insurer. The term 'whole life' means you pay the premium your whole life, but the risk to the insurance company steadily diminishes to zero. Then, your preimum is pure profit to them and the longer you live the more they make, in addition to the difference between your 'whole life' premium and their term premium on you. Their risk is greatest when the CSV is lowest. Oh, did I mention that they also collect interest on your money when you borrow against the CSV. How generous of them. You can buy term yourself, invest the difference between your term policy and what you would have paid for 'whole life' and also collect the interest on that investment. That's what I did, and I am $$$$ ahead. Had I died in the first week of my term insurance the payoff to my wife would have been the same as if it were a 'whole life' policy. If I die tomorrow, my wife's payoff is greater than if she were counting on the face value of a 'whole life' policy whose CSV was equal to the face value of the policy.
