I had this problem once, but i don't remember exactly how i fixed it. I remember though i played with the SET COLLATE command.
Try set collate to "general" or set collate to "machine" prior to opening the table, and if it still displays the error message, check on all collating options and codes. This happens because the table was created in a different collating sequence that the one your current machine uses. For me, it happened when trying to open a german table on Hebrew windows 98.
