After testing MS Visual Source Safe and PVCS we've also decided to go with PVCS here at the Dept of Rev.

A techie at PVCS walked me through the setup in about 20 minutes, including the downloading of the new SCC setup files from the MS webserver. The most laborious part was setting up the 45 extensions ( DBF -->.DBV, etc...) in the master config file, which I did after I got off the line with the techie.
.
Version control with PVCS is a walk in the park. It is very easy to mark a set of files with a version stamp, unlike VSS. Checking in and out is very quick. I've been experimenting with having the archive files on a central server or having each developer keep their project archive files on their local HD. The latter seems more promising because of speed and space savings. (We have about a dozen programmers, eaching working on many independent projects some of which have to be rewritten each year and may have several versions. We think we would fill up a two gig server very quickly if all archinving were done on the one server.

I've also noticed that it survives crashes without problems (so far - knock on wood).

A note: before you can add a DBC to version control you must clean up the project (which closes all the project manager branches), issue a close database and then close the project. Open the project again but don't open the database tree. Add the DBC to version control.
Also, on occasions, when comparing a souce code listing of a current method with that of its prior version, a line of binary code at the top of the current liisting prevents a line-by-line comparison with a previous version. ??? Minor problems considering what I ran into while testing VSS.
