I'm not an expert and I don't know your particular router but if it is a NAT router (I assume it is if it has DHCP) it will be more difficult for an external hacker to get to your client PCs unless they have a Trojan in place. Newer routers also include more advanced firewall features like port blocking/management.
I grabbed a D-link Airplus router that comes with filtering and port controls. The wireless part is encrypted as well for max security. I feel reasonably safe with virus software and all incoming ports shut. You might also consider zonealarm which allows you to customise security for different sites (this one goes wonky if you mask ip header information or disable cookies, so I turn those off for UT) and warns you if evil critters try to send stuff out.
I assume you have no e-mail server or web server inside the router if your ip changes every 24 hours. If you do, look closely at your router port settings and the vendor's website for security updates. If not, close all incoming ports.
Take a look at grc.com to see what effect your router is having. Look at the manufacturer's website for firmware patches and updates/advice re security.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
