That's about what Borland did with dBASE when they decided they didn't want it any more. (Which, let's be clear, Microsoft has not said about VFP). They turned it over to a group of long-time dBASE enthusiasts who said they would collaborate and continue to advance the product.

Heard anything about it lately?
