.NET is approximately 4 years old. (The .NET SDK was released at PDC 2000. Add another year and a half to two years to get it to that point and you come up with 4 years). .NET came out of some technology that Microsoft was developing to emulate the Java virtual machine. Very similar to the COM+ runtime. So this time frame is just about right. We can consider .NET a mature technology sometime in 2003 when they release version 2.

Saying that .NET will take 4 to 5 years to mature is a wonderful headline, but the starting point was 1998/1999, not 2002.
