I think marketing plays a role, but uncertainty about it's future has always been a big problem as well. The problem, IMO, has been VFP's bad reputation, however undeserving it may have been. I don't know how may threads about the furture of VFP have shown up on this site but if I had a dime...

OpenSource would solve this problem once and for all, because VFP would never be unsupported. Even if the community desolved an orgaization would have access to all the source code. If, in the future, some unforseen bug cropped up in their VFP based app they could go back to the VFP source to fix it, if need be.

I think OpenSource would bring in a lot of fresh faces. Developers that have used VFP a little in the past, might find a new interest for it as and OpenSource tool.

Marketing may help but I don't think it will solve the problem.
