Are you using the Mere Mortals framework? I found some helpful information in the manual itself. Also, when I went to the Great Lakes Great Database Workshop, Kevin McNeish did a session that helped me understand it better.
Something else that helped me was thinking of an application in this way: SQL Server as the data store, Visual FoxPro COM objects in the middle tier, and VB or ASP as the front end. When you start thinking along those lines, I think you see better what the middle tier has to do.
