Interesting point. I don't know if MS purchased VFP to eliminate a competitor - but it would be interesting to know how much of VFP was eventually used in SQL Server, OLE DB and yes, even Access. In my copy of Professional ADO 2.5 Programming (Wrox), it states on page 96 that ...

"The OLE DB Cursor Service uses technology which was originally developed for Visual FoxPro to provide a data caching mechanism that temporarily stores data and metadata in the form of an OLE DB Rowset in local memory."

I found it interesting that VFP was mentioned - the fact that OLE DB was modelled after VFP's cursors (at least according to this book...) didn't really surprise me.

At any rate, from a personal perspective, I moved mostly into VB-SQL over the last few years - not because I didn't (or don't) like VFP - but mostly because I wanted to have other career options. So far, it was the right choice for me.
