A ton. Check out learnvisualstudio.com, gotdotnet, dotnetjunkies. There are also a number of decent books as well. However, I would suggest playing with the free resources before dumpting money on books.

Then I would suggest ringing the register as long as you can with the current app, while at the same time, getting up to speed on VS .NET. As to which language to choose, I prefer VB .NET, but C# is perfectly fine as well.

Would these be a waste of resources in the long term?

Given your situation, if you don't need to move to SQL now, then yes, dumping more resources into learning how to use VFP and SQL, IMO, is not the best use of resources.
