The number of columns is ca. 255.

I don't know of a work-around - perhaps SQL server has the option to create something like a "virtual table" - however they call it -, something like a view, where you include only fields that are of interest to you.

And indeed, I think your "not me" is justified - more than 255 fields is usually an indication of a bad design.
