Here in Kuwait, we see Oracle only in the big companies/organizations, in fact from my experience in the market here I found that one of the things that effects the Decision between the companies it is the “Repetition”, people here Oracle is v. good, so they go with it, whey they here SQL Server has bugs they drop it !!, most of them never judge technically.

See this,
I know one company working on a new project and they want to buy a database engine, they prefer Oracle, but they have some financial problems so I told them to go with SQL2000 Server it’s much cheaper. They refused and they insisted to get Oracle .In fact I couldn’t convenes them, look at these figures:
- Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition 25 User, Costs almost US$ 19,000.00
- Oracle Support/Upgrade Plan 25 User, Costs almost US$ 4,800.00
So, total is almost : US$ 23,800.00

While SQL2000 Server Enterprise Edition 25 User, Cost almost US$ 10,000.00

After all, still they are not convinced !!!!
Here the Repetition works.

>>I think the backend used should be dependent upon the requirements. SQL Server has a number of security issues that Oracle does not enjoy. Within the banking industry in the United States I understand from my relatives in that industry that SQL Server would not be considered for any serious monetary function. Oracle costs a great deal of money to implement! Just look at the experience of the State of California, where I live!

>The security of SQLServer2000 is the same as Oracle9i one FYI. Difference is only in speed of image procesing.
>Why other banks use Orcle, becouse Oracle is older database server and there are a lot of customers implmented it before 1990. Most of their servers are UNIX.
>To change technology and hardware is very expensive.

>>Although SQL Server does cost a fraction of Oracle the needs analysis must be considered. If the highest degree of security is not needed then SQL Server is a good product to consider.
>>
>>I echo your advice to use the tool you are familiar with in this case VB. Consideration should be given to learn VB.NET. At this point in time with the immaturity of .NET I would suggest not spending too much time with the product. Try to ask questions, read and see what VB.NET is capable of in comparison to your needs.
