I think I would take a step back, and try to get them to design a program... I have a 7 year old and a 4 year old, so I have a little ways to go. But from personal experience (back when I started on my c64), I would have found it extremely useful to have a goal first. Maybe design it on paper, then in some way in the computer, then get to the coding.

I think you might be putting the cart before the horse by trying to worry with a language. I know you want to hold his interest, but if you work directly with him on the project (maybe a couple nights a week at a set time?), I bet there will be no problem with that.
