I am using SQL Server now, with Visual FoxPro on the front-end, and they work well together. I used a book from www.hentzenwerke.com, Client/Server Applications with Visual FoxPro and SQL Server, that helped a great deal in moving the data from VFP to SQL Server.

However, to get your application on the Internet, you don't have to use SQL Server. Check out Web Connection at www.west-wind.com.
