As usual when weird unexplainable things happen it is usually due to a defective/corrupt foxuser table. I purge all foxuser.dbf and .fpt files and VFP came back up no problem.
One of the biggest issues I hear about a lot with VFP is that the tables and indexes are too easily corrupted. I'd think that one of the more important items to work on in VFP 8 would be making the tables less susceptible to corruption.
Anyway, my problem is no solved, time to move on...
