I am well aware of the importance and use of complex numbers. (I have a master in electrical engineering).
The quote was given to me by my match teacher in high school when he introduced complex numbers to me. He went on by saying that if I continued studing mathematics I would understand the importance.

Even though I understand complex numbers I still think the quote is kind of funny.
