Thanks for the response, I really appreciate it.
The real cause of the problem that I was having had to do with the file system on my W2K Prof computer. As it turns out, the vcx was physically visible to me but could not be read by the file system. After deleting the vcx/vct, I could not replace them with new copies because the file system thought they were still there and were open.
After many other attempts at correction, I finally defragmented my hard drive and that released the file system "locks" on the phantom files. I'd never encountered anything like this before.
