How many records in the table in question... are you sure the system is hung, or might it be just taking a long time to process?

If there are lots of records then it could be that you don't have all of the indexes needed to make the query run as fast as possible.

Also, how much RAM on the machine wioth the problem?...Is it a workstation on a network?...What OS is running on the workstation?...Is there a virus scan program running on the machine?
