Entropy dictates that order cannot flow from chaos without addition of external energy.

Astrophysicists go all wobbly when you ask how gravity can oppose entropy unless it brings energy from outside the system. "What goes up must come down" is a closed equation but clouds of dust collapsing under their own gravity... well, we have yet to discover where that energy comes from.

Even so, if we agree for the purpose of discussion that the Universe favours the stable, I take it then that all progress or lack thereof is a function of interacting stability/instability? If so, it certainly meets the KISS principle... quite neat actually.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
