Next time it happens, before you deleted the directory, check who the owner is with an 'ndir'. I'm betting that something is removing the 'owner' name from the directory. We ran into that when people would leave and they would be removed as a user. All of the files that they 'owned' would return a "Not a Database file" error when they grew to a size that would move into the next sector on the drive, and maybe you are running into that.
