A Linux/SaMBa combination would work fine as long as it's just VFP data. Such a server will not run programs such as SQL Server, but if you want to go client-server in the future other databases will.

Many would consider it more stable than W2K and it's much less expensive (software cost maybe US$50 or less, vs. US$500+ for W2K Server).

The biggest issue with Linux/SaMBa is getting someone to set it up for you. If you can't find anyone experienced, you're probably better off with W2K.
