Refusing ? Oh my if I ever understood what you want I'd provide the answer (assuming I might have an answer). Simply cannot see how your problem differs from the original one. IOW I can't see the need for grouping. SQL checks if record is a match for a particular group (Ino there Town in your case with maxdate of that group). If it's includes in result list. That's not 'group by' but an indirect grouping. Glad you solved.
