Well I suspect that 256meg is most likely OK. But the only way to know for sure would be to check with Compaq and IBM (you mention these names) for the specific models involved.
Assuming that they are sold as servers then, as I said, I suspect they are OK. The one we switched to after our incident that I mentioned was a Compaq P90 with 256meg and it was fine.

In any case, none of this additional information has much to do with 'next day' type of problems as much as it simply rounds out the situation.
