Thanks for your replies. I plan to use a NVL() type command in the sql*select statement to avoid this NULL problem. But I really need to know why this is a "bug"? Selecting fields that have a NULL in them works fine, it is only when a variable (ora command) that results in a NULL does the problem exist like in :

select proper(Table1.Name) as NewName from table1 into cursor temp

My question is why does this cause an error???
