I found something under help that may actually be the trick.

Tell the assistant "Delete Page numbers".
"Remove Page numbers" is one of the options. Select that.
On the bottom it says:

Word automatically removes the page numbers throughout the document. To remove page numbers for part of a document, divide the document into sections and break the connection between them. For more information, click .
