For Me, you should be use the default argument of sys(3054), and the index File create it so:
INDEX ON gecode FOR !DELETE() TAG GECODE

after use the first code:

SELECT SP
SET ORDER TO GECODE
SELECT spnumber FROM species into CURSOR mycodes WHERE gecode = gecodex
