Rod;

Thank you for your comments and the information you have given us.

Although I only know JVP through this forum and his writings, I seem to get along with him. I am one who agrees with his message about the future of VFP and learning how to use additional software development tools. I have been aware of the software development market during the last 20 years and attempt to “keep on top of it”. This has necessitated learning several programming languages.

The name of the game of life is to survive. I have a wife and we have two children in college with retirement looking me in the face. I see no reason to become lax and learn nothing new or to not be concerned with the market place. If someone is comfortable with only using one development tool so be it. I advocate awareness and I am market driven. Go where the money is.

If you can support yourself taking care of DOS applications and you are happy that is great! Not everyone should respond to the message of learning other software development languages. The message is meant to be a wake up call for those that are interested. It is not a matter of personalities but of choice. It is a title and not a reason to create friction. Too bad others did not see it that way.

Many times when John would present his suggestions a limited number of forum members would attack him – one in particular – and a simple comment thus became the catalyst to use foul and demeaning language. After being hit from several sides John would be in a defensive position. It was like a wounded fish being surrounded by a school of hungry sharks.

John did make comments in absolute terms as to what was acceptable from a technical viewpoint without regard for another person’s success. Allowing for additional viewpoints is important in life. I am not surprised when there are ten ways to do something. Often I will examine which ways a problem could be resolved and use what I think best. That is my option as a developer.

I feel that John is a passionate and intelligent person. Circumstances got out of control and we have lost him as a forum member. John did not behave in what may be termed “an acceptable manner”. Too bad he did not simply break the thread and avoid further dialogue when the “fur began to fly”! Unfortunately the fur flew too often. I do not know what may have happened to Steve Black as his actions in this matter were a major contributor to all of this.

I think that many of us are in shock as to the outcome of this story. After returning from a wonderful two week vacation in Oregon I am still not settled down.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Tom

>>>Yes, I do find it interesting. However, I do have questions/comments:
>
>>>- While I don't agree with JVPs tactics or language, I do agree with some >>of his underlying message. That is, VFP developers need to look at other >>technologies/tools.

>I agree with you here. While his message might not have been one people want to hear it may have been one they need to here. Getting "objective" advice means hearing two sides of an argument. Silencing a voice that does not think that Fox is long for the world is a bad thing to those that seek different opinions.

>I don't know what damages he has suffered if any. I guess some complainers may have caused him to react.

>>>That you, a good friend of JVP, pop up here with this information
>I posted this link because after careful consideration I felt that this action was wrong. John no longer has a voice here and I want you all to know why.
