I disagree on one point, the Visual Tools for developing HTML front-ends are good enough now that we have ASP.NET. Previously they were painful with plain ASP.
>Certainly my hospital clients, networks flooded with server round trips from all the "latest" Browser apps including ours, are starting to grumble.
The things I get from a browser front end are
- zero to minimal workstation configuration. Simply have a working browser. No DLL installs, no ODBC configuration, no SQL/Oracle client install...
- zero to minimal effort distribute updates
- my apps can be accessed from Windows, Mac, Linux, Pocket PC and other platforms
- zero to minimal effort for remote access
- rewriting our front-end from VFP forms to ASP.NET is proving easier than expect (though it will take months to do)
Going from a pure VFP app to an browser-based system, our network bandwidth usage is drowing considerably, so our network admins are happier.
