You must have gotten an "A" in English literature. I found this in a book I read recently, where it was included as a common saying but not attributed to a specific author. I think you must be right, though. I had to look it up, but the original appears to be John Shirley's The Glories of Our Blood and State, to wit:

The glories of our blood and state
Are shadows, not substantial things;
There is no armor against fate;
Death lays his icy hand on Kings.
