What is your server and workstation versions? I am assuming you mean that you don't run it with terminal services, but actually on the workstation on these? If you are combining windows 98 with 2000 on the server my experience has been that performance is slow.

In addition, I don't know of any way to "use" a file without an alias (the default is for the alias to be the same as the filename).
