I think you should ask whether someone EVER encountered a "Too many files open"; from your description I smell something like too many filehandles used. Could that be possible ? (yea, with FILES=1 it's always possible).

And indeed, you might ask whether they use the smart laptops, reconnecting automatically after just pullng the plug (underlaying subject of Yuri's story).
