Yes; don't use Win9x...you're probably running with a large number of fonts, desktop shortcuts and a high-resolution color depth, and are running out of GDI memory which gets used for screens and print output, which is limited to a total of 64KB for all processes in the ROT under Win9x (95, 98, WinME); an NT-derived OS is able to allocate 64KB of GDI per process. You can try switching video modes to one that requires less memory (smaller screen resolution or less color depth), reducing the number of shortcuts on the desktop and reducing the number of installed fonts to make Win9x use less memory from the GDI per process so that you don't run out of GDI.
