The formal term is “Goal Keeper”. I have played and watched soccer since I was a kid. During this period I have heard both “Goalie” and “Keeper” used to define what I term “Target”! :)

I have heard many British players use the term "Goalie" and Germans use "Keeper". Goalie seems to be popular on the West Coast.

No self respecting United States Citizen would dare use the full name of anything. We always seem to be finding a way to shorten words – we are in a hurry.
