Try:

APPEND GENERAL gMyGeneralField FROM C:\MyJPEGs\ARandomJPEGFile.JPG

You can link rather than embed the file in the General field bvy adding the LINK clause. You can specify an alternative server with the CLASS clause. You can read the OnLine Help File on APPEND GENERAL for other details.
