one thing we ran into when doing pretty much the same thing was updating the software. when it was on a server, there was one copy to update and everyone was current. when the exe was local, we had to know who was using it and who needed to be updated ...
i know this doesn't answer your question at all, but it may help in the deciding process. many of our exes are local now and we have come up with various ways to update them automatically or have the program annonce the availability of new updates.
