MORE MEMORY! This will speed up almost every aspect of SQL.

Also, make sure you are using the best recovery model for your use of SQL server and your backup schedule.

Have you tried to dettach the database, make a copy of the file, then reattach the database? This of course is similar to simple recovery mode, but it does allow you less downtime and you can back up the copy of the database to a tap while the server is up and running.
