A couple things. I was one of those on the DevX forum that responded to the original posting that "inspired" Whil to to write his response. (I encouraged the writer to ask Whil directly, rather than speculate why he wasn't attending / sponsoring a booth.) Recently there was a discussion on JVP's whereabouts - it's simply a "sighting" report - not everyone here visits that forum.
