You can check fragmentation with DBCC SHOWCONTIG().

What happens when you run a query from QA with the results in TEXT mode (NOT grid)?

Also, try using the NOLOCK table hint. maybe you were being blocked by another connection:

SELECT * FROM mytable WITH (NOLOCK)

What does DBCC CHECKTABLE() return?
