Excuse me for hopping in on this thread a little late but . . . what the heck.

I have always used third party software for working with serial ports and can't speak for mscomm. If your needs are limited and your time not limited you could go with mscomm, I didn't. I have a credit card payment processing app where I have to send/receive messages and send/receive files via xmodem, zmodem and so on, and I use CommTools ( www.magnacartasoftware.com ). I do this primarily because I have to deail with a myriad of modems, different baud rate/stop bit/parity settings, and different transfer protocols (x-modem, y-modeml, z-modem) and CommTools handles this stuff with relative aplomb.

Where I'm leading to is, if your requirements great enough, there are third party solutions that allow you to do just about anything you need to within VFP. CommTools is one, another ActiveX solution called Async Professional is offered by Turbopower ( www.turbopower.com better known in the Delphi community).

Regards,
Scott
