IMO, set the value in the stored procedure that is being called to update the database. If you're not using stored procedures, use a trigger or - start using stored procedures.

Is it better to update the field from the user interface or by creating an update trigger? Is there a different way to do this? Which way is the standard? Any other thoughts?
