I had the same problem and did a .prg that compares the new .dbf structure to the old .dbf stucture. If they were different I backed up the old file, did an append from the old file to the new file, and copied the new file to the proper location and name. In addition to doing the append I would take care of any other housekeeping requirements, populating new fields, etc. Other than being a little tedious when I have to make changes to the "convert to new format" program, the procedure has worked well for the last six or seven years.
