I'm not advocating this because it may break your VFP developement environment and I don't know about the legality of it. However, you can open the ENU file up in something like VC++ and work with it that way. It is probably alittle easier than the hex editor route.
Because of all the problems with this approach, I would simply try to trap for situation up front and display my own message then.
