It's very late in the thread, but if you are interested in another option, I have had very good success with the XCeed ZIP Control. No wrapping needed - they even include VFP examples in their help file.
For I think $395 (price varies because they seem to be running specials all the time), you get the ZIP object which does ZIP to disk or memory stream, Streaming Compression Object (the reason I bought the thing) which does BZIP to memory stream or disk, Base64 translation on-the-fly, Encryption Object (which I am not using), and their FTP object. Smooth, and no wrapping.
I can take a big cursor, XMLize it, compress it, and WinHTTP-POST it very quickly with their stuff. I highly recommend it.
