That was Will Durant. He also wrote "The Story of Civilization", originally ten books I believe, as well as several other books.

Will Durant had a great sense of humor, the ability to tell an interesting story and convey the meaning of his subject material. Joseph Campbell is so enjoyable to read or to watch and listen to his many television offerings.
